Yeah! It’s the most important document to solemnize wedding
in the foreign country. It implies that you can’t have a big day unless you
produce the certificate of your single status. Let’s say, you want to tie the
knot in Brazil, you must have a single status affidavit. Yes! It’s a pivotal
document to satisfy the foreign ministry of Brazil or any foreign government
stating that the person is indeed single. Thereby, he/she becomes able to exchange
woos ‘I Do’ with the spouse without any hitch.
You should know that the immigration authority of the
foreign country asks for a bachelorhood certificate in particular. But, a few
nations, like Brazil, mandate its affidavit rather than its certificate from
India.
What’s a single
status affidavit?
It’s a written declaration stating that the affiant is
actually single by the marital status. Here, you should notify the fact that
the word ‘single’ determines the one who has no spouse. The affiant can be a
divorced person or a widow. In all, he who seeks this proof can be a window or
a divorced one.
Let’s catch a cursory look over, how can you draft it by
your own. Drill into your mind that it’s your oath on paper. So, you should be
very particular over what you’re going to write in it. Now, let’s move to its
drafting from scratch.
What should you write in the single status affidavit, India?
It can be written on any plain sheet or a piece of paper.
1. Title: State the title of the document. It should read-Affidavit of Single Status. Align it in the center and make it bold & underlined.
2. Date: Mention the day, month and year clearly in the beginning. It should go as- On May 15, 2018 (sample date)……………..
3. Affiant’s name: Affiant is the one who writes the oath to authenticate his words. Continue your beginning while stating the name of the affiant this way-On May 15, 2018 (sample date), I, Alex (example)……….
4. Residence: You should notify your complete Indian address in this affidavit. Let’s carry forward the aforementioned sample while fusing in the residence.
On May 15, 2018 (sample date), I, Alex (example), the resident of A-12, Rohini, Delhi (sample address)……………
5. Zip code: Subsequently, you need to feed in the zip code there to squarely mention the address. It’s really important to provide this code as it can be sought by the judiciary system or immigration authority anytime.
You can complete the address this way- On May 15, 2018 (sample date), I, Alex (example), the resident of A-12, Rohini, Delhi (sample address) 110042 (sample zip code).
6. Date of birth & country: Once you’re done with providing your residential address in the affidavit, input your valid date of birth with location (state & country). It goes in the affidavit after your address as-
I was born on Jan 1, 1990 in Delhi, India (sample DoB and place).
7. Citizenship of country: It’s a little bit different from the country that you’ve mentioned in the foregoing section. Probably, you might have surrendered the citizenship of India. In the nutshell, you should write the name of the country of whose citizenship you would have. If you’ve not given up Indian citizenship yet, you can write as-
I am a citizen of India.
8. Passport number with valid date of issuance & expiry: Provide the details of your passport. It can be of any country. For example- My passport number is xxxxxxx issued from May 12, 2012 (Sample date of issuance) to March 12, 2022. (Sample date of expiry).
9. Current occupation & company’s address: Thereupon, you need to write up your designation and the company’s address. Let’s say-
I currently work as an IT Networking Engineer with XYZ Company, Noida.
10. Declaration: It should subtly read about your single status. Don’t leave any hoop or discrepancy to point finger at you. If you’ve any confusion, you can write it this way-
I’m single. I’ve never been married (if you’re bachelor) or divorced (if you’re legally a divorced person) or widowed (if your spouse is no more) on June 2, 2011 (Sample date) and has not solemnized marriage after that.
11. Signature of the Affiant: The immigration authority of the foreign country wants to know about who the affiant is. Therefore, the signature pertaining to him should be there at the end. It should be manually inked there.
12. Name in Print: Further, you need to print out your name so that the competent authority can legibly read who the affiant is. Sometimes, the signature is very difficult to understand. To avoid such illegibility, you need to print your name suffixing your autograph.
13. Notary: (notarized before whom on date): It’s very crucial since the foreign authority won’t deem it as a legitimate document. You have to notarize it with a notary officer or DM or SDM.
14. Apostille: It’s a process of legalization. The MEA in India apostille this document. You can’t get it apostilled directly. Visit the website of the Ministry of External Affairs. Go through the list of the authorized outsourcers or you can outsource with S2NRI. It doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. And, you’ll get this attestation sans any hassle.
In many countries, they do not accept affidavit. Some countries embassy request for the original single status letter from government of individual's state.
