Do you belong to the tax-paying diaspora of Indian
non-residents? Are you aware of the recent amendment introduced by the central
government? Here are the two latest updates for you.
Aadhaar or PAN Card
mandatory for NRIs:Most of the emigrants or those who have lived more 182 days
in the past 12 months abroad think that Aadhar Card is mandatory for the
natives only. A few days ago, it was true but 5 April 2017 made a little
amendment to it. Along with natives, NRIs will also have to enroll for this
card from now. Otherwise, their application for tax-return will be rejected.
Bear in mind that Aadhaar Card is a 12-digit alphanumeric
unique identification number. The authoritative person captures biometrics
images of the applicant. Thereby, the unique id is automatically generated in
the record-books of the government officials.
What things must be
kept in mind while linking Aadhaar with PAN Card? Moreover, one more thing the non-residents must keep in
mind. If they get PAN card for tax
payment, it should be linked to Aadhaar number. Therefore, the biometric
details would be mixed and matched with this card holder. Also, the name of the
bearer must spell identical or same to the name mentioned in the Aadhaar. Other
details, like address, may vary.
This amendment is introduced under the Financial Act 2017. This
rule will be executed since July 2017.
Now, the worries have caught them up since their biometric
and demographic details can be at stake if there falls any loop in the data
security. It implies that their privacy is at risk. And those who have to pat
domestic income tax, they have to hurry up since just a few months are spared
to file income tax returns.
The prime concern is that they have to fly down to India for
giving their biometric details. It would be an extra financial burden upon
them.
